Mons Avenue, Maroubra

Chris and Yolanda Young engaged Hilary Winder Design to undertake a large renovation project at their 7 bedroom, 3 story home in Maroubra Sydney. The project involved a complete gut and remodel of the top level of their home as their requirements changed significantly and their home no longer functioned at its optimum. 

 

The brief also included modifying other structural and not structural elements within the house such as their middle level lounge room, incorporating a new steel spine staircase (to connect the spaces) and updating an existing bathroom and laundry. Creating a much needed laundry shoot from the upper level -something we love to put into our projects when we can! 

 

The family have 6 children, so there was a heavy focus on creating Yolanda’s dream kitchen and an entertaining/dining area that their family could all gather in, encapsulating the district views and natural light. 

 

The new kitchen featured a large island bench and bar area, as well as all the functional requirements for making cooking and cleaning up a breeze. The enormous butlers pantry was carefully designed to

ensure every element was laid out carefully and all the little details which make a house a home, incorporated into the design. 

 

With all their children still living at home, Chris and Yolanda needed their own space they could escape to. The new layout delivered a Parents Retreat with large bedroom, fabulous walk in dressing room and an oversized ensuite they didn’t have to share with anyone! Another new bathroom was also incorporated into the design and a large Media room, which Chris was clearly very excited about. 

 

This project involved offering the clients a variety conceptual layouts to consider. Using 3D projections helped them visualise the proposed designs. Once the layout was finalised, we collaborated on Look and Feel boards to refine the aesthetic direction, and eventually lock in the finishes and fittings chosen for the spaces.

 

The outcome was a space that not only felt well designed but most importantly, functioned on every level - meeting personal objectives and staying true to the concepts and direction that was initially proposed.
